The Mafia Racing Team is the most unique team of professional and elite racers in the world! Our racing focus is off-road while our outreach focus is every community we pass through, every person who could be getting out and exploring their neighborhood instead of sitting in front of the TV, and every retiree who thinks they are too old to start. We strive to inspire individuals to listen and play music, eat healthy, be creative, take care of their own bodies and to take care of others and the environment. Our goal… to incorporate the arts, health, culture, sustainability, creativity, charity and most of all – community – in one team! Look for us on the road this 08/09 race season and stop by the Mafia lounge for some free swag, giveaways and product testing through our gracious team partners! Check the schedule to track us down, and feel free to shoot us an email with any questions or comments you may have!

The Mafia Racing Team is composed of both males and females with a nationally competing 15 athlete pro roster and 4 USA regional teams – West Coast, Mountain Region, South West, and North West. Each team may host up to 30 riders. Our teams travel throughout North America to compete in mountain bike, cyclo-cross, off-road triathlons, and even some road cycling and running races.

Mafia Racing is proud to be the home of some of the best racers in the world, including Jeremiah work – UCI World Cup contender in 4X, Nate Hills – consistent top pro DH/Super-D finishes in the acclaimed Mountain States Cup series, as well as Jake Wells – one of the top cyclo-cross racers in the USA, Becca Blay – top women’s pro XC finisher in the Mountain States Cup, 2006/2008 USA Xterra National champion - Seth Wealing, and Spencer Powlison - 2x Team USA winter triathlon team member, Kate Scheider - 2x top 3 national U-23 cyclo-cross finisher, and Abby Strigel – WORS series overall Women’s Elite/Pro champion 2008.

  • SPONSORS: Felt, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Mafia Racing, GoFast energy drink, Crank Brothers, GU, NUUN, Mix1, JETT MTB, Silverback Music, Squirt lube, Illegal Petes, AKA3D.net, Northwave
  • FAVORITE RACE: The Frutia Mountain States Cup was my favorite mountain bike race of last year. It was a windy and twisty power course with some fun technical-ish sections and incredible views.
  • FAVORITE TRAINING RIDE: Hitting all of the nearby mountain trails just above Colorado Springs - (Stratton Meadows to Columbine to Buckhorn & Captain Jacks to Palmer Trail and Section 16 :).
  • AVERAGE DAY CONSISTS OF: Waking up a precious 6 year old boy to get him ready for school, walking him and the family dog to school, having 5 hours to run errands and get my training in, picking up the boy from school and playing with him and/or tutoring middle school science, math and writing.
  • ANY MENTORS: Kristen Dieffenbach, Marilyn Trout, Alison Dunlap and Greg Frozley
  • FAVORITE RACE FOOD: My mom's amAzing rice crispie treats
  • WORST EXPERIENCE IN A RACE: In 2005, I felt terrible in a local NJ MTB race and dropped out halfway through. Looking back, I know I cracked myself going out too hard, but it became the first and last time I'll ever drop out of a race. I felt like a quitter. Unless there is something seriously wrong with your health or bike, it is always better to tough it out and get a poor result over dropping out!
  • WHAT'S ON YOUR KITCHEN TABLE RIGHT NOW: My breakfast that is waiting patiently for me: a bowl a Steel Cut Oats that's cooling off and a glass of OJ.
  • IF YOU WEREN'T AN ATHLETE, WHAT WOULD YOU BE: I'd be an Inclusive teacher for a grade level between Kindergarten and 12th grade. That means I'd be a classroom teacher who also advocates for including and supporting students who have special needs in "regular" classrooms. There are many misconceptions and misrepresentations of what inclusion looks like so I'd be one of the many educators currently trying to sort those issues out. Implementing inclusion appropriately in our nation's schools would make our education system more financially stable and more pedagogically effective across the board, so I think it is incredibly important. Also, I might eventually apply for a doctoral program in one of the niches under the Cultural Foundations of Education umbrella... with hopes of getting funded at Stanford's program. AND/OR I'd try to find a way to become a professional cruiser bike rider...maybe I could test ride them?? (seriously).

  • FAVORITE RACE: MTB - Vermont 50 Miler, Xterra - Xterra Iron Creek, Ski: Stowe Derby
  • FAVORITE TRAINING RIDE: A huge MTB ride up in the mountains. Monarch Crest is one of my favorites, but it's hard to call that "training!"
  • AVERAGE DAY CONSISTS OF: Usually some sort of training before work — ski in the winter, swim/run/bike in the summer, then off to work 9-5 at the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA). Depending on how much daylight is left, I'll try to ride or run after work and then dinner with my lovely girlfriend, who happens to be an awesome cook! If I'm lucky, I'll fit in a little time to play the piano.
  • ANY MENTORS: I'd say my Dad, but I look up to lots of other great athletes, like Mike Kloser, Brian Smith, Dave Wiens and other "working-class" heroes.
  • FAVORITE RACE FOOD: Candy corn always tastes good during a really long race.
  • WORST EXPERIENCE IN A RACE: During my first race ever in Colorado, I crashed super hard on the first lap, flatted, totally banged myself up (probably should have gotten stitches). Then, on the last lap, I flatted again and had to run/ride it back for several miles. That was before I started running. I was sore for days.
  • WHAT'S ON YOUR KITCHEN TABLE RIGHT NOW: Well, my sweater is air drying... don't want it to shrink. But usually just some magazines, candles (that's the GF, not me), and pretty much always a really good meal in the evening.
  • IF YOU WEREN'T AN ATHLETE, WHAT WOULD YOU BE: That's really hard to imagine... probably I'd be doing something with music. I can't remember a time when I wasn't one so it's pretty hard to say...

  • WEIGHT: 148
  • CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: 1st 24 Hrs of Moab Duo/Pro 2006, 2nd 18hrs of Fruita Solo 2007, 2nd Colorado State Cyclocross Championships Mens elite 2008, 4th Whiskey 50 OffRoad 2008, 18th Cross National Championships 2007, 20th Cross National Championship 2008
  • SPONSORS: Felt, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Mafia Racing, GoFast energy drink, Crank Brothers, GU, NUUN, Mix1, JETT MTB, Silverback Music, Squirt lube, Illegal Petes, AKA3D.net, Northwave
  • FAVORITE RACE: Whiskey 50 OffRoad, Prescott, AZ (mtn bike), CrossVegas (cross)
  • FAVORITE TRAINING RIDE: One of my favorite spring training rides is the WhiteRim in Moab, UT. In late Febuary I find myself daydreaming about the consistent day in the saddle with my bros, and the amazing scenery. From the front porch however, the “Burns loop” is a staple 80 mile road ride with the middle 25 miles on dirt, along the Colorado River.
  • AVERAGE DAY CONSISTS OF: In the summer my average day varies weekly but minus a few details…6:00 am Waking up with Linda, and, Tatum. 7:30 am Out the door to meet the fellas and carpool to the job site. 8:00 am Begin work as interior trim carpenter, 12:30 pm Break for lunch. 4:30 pm Off work and getting ready for a ride. 7:30 pm Eating dinner with Linda and T and ready for bed. 8:30 pm Doing any needed bike maintenance and catching up on emails. 10:30 pm Getting ready for bed.
  • ANY MENTORS: Two mentors that come to mind are Mike Janelle and my Father David, who have both made profound impacts on my life. I think more importantly, if I surround myself with people who I respect and who challenge me, I can be learning in every facet of my life, everyday.
  • FAVORITE RACE FOOD: Depending on the distance of the race my race day menu changes a little, Pre race food favorite would have to be French toast or a nice big bowl of steel cut oats with yogurt and fruit. I really like the EFS bars from first endurance, but a little difficult to eat unless it is a longer race or a little less intense. The Roctane energy gel from GU Energy is great for pre-race and during. For post race I prefer Orange Creamcicle Ultragen from first endurance.
  • WORST EXPERIENCE IN A RACE: My worst race experience actually came at a local Wednesday night race while I was racing the sport class. We were doing multiple laps on Vail Mtn. when an Expert racer who was trying to get around myself and a female racer became impatient and let loose with a barrage of profanity. It was at that moment I made it a point to never take racing a bike too seriously. No matter how competitive you become it is still riding a bike.
  • WHAT'S ON YOUR KITCHEN TABLE RIGHT NOW: Right now on my kitchen table is a couple stacks of mail, a light up keychain, and a Christmas Cactus that is yet to bloom, at least in the five years we have had it.
  • IF YOU WEREN'T AN ATHLETE, WHAT WOULD YOU BE? There are all levels of athleticism. So, if I wasn’t racing bikes at a competitive level, I would be “athletic” in my daily life because, to me, that’s what “living” is. By setting goals and working toward them you are being athletic. Challenging your self mentally and physically, getting stronger from your experiences is being athletic.

  • David comes from a background in team sports. While playing hockey and baseball at the collegiate level he found his true love cycling and then “team” sports were quickly over. Moving to Colorado after college was over; David raced competitively in the Xterra off-road triathlon series, finding much success at the National level as an amateur. The off-road cycling community quickly became his passion and he’s worked hard to develop the sport ever since, but now as a team director and owner. “Mountain Biking isn’t my passion,” he jokes. “Helping others mountain bike is my passion! Creating something unlike everything else is my passion! Working to bring everybody together is my passion!”
  • David currently resides in Lafayette, CO. When not on the road with the team he loves to play hockey and golf, wakeboard, play dominoes, spend time with friends and family, and of course ride bikes.
